About Judy Parrish
Here is just part of Judy's story told by members of her community as they raised funds for the family through their “Let’s Keep her Heart Beating” campaign…in summer of 2012
“Judy is in need of a heart transplant. Her heart is currently working at only 10%. This condition was caused by a medication she needed to take to survive Breast Cancer five years ago. The need for this transplant is truly a matter of life and death.
Severe heart failure has caused Judy to leave her job as a Dental Hygienist for the Dr. Bruce Miller practice where she was employed for 25 years. She also sat on the board of Powell Township School. Her husband Jeff has been a volunteer on the Powell Township Ambulance Service for over 20 years. He was awarded the Marquette County EMT of the year in 2003. Both Judy and Jeff have given a lot to their community, anyone who knows this couple knows that if this were anyone else, they would be there to help in any way they could. Last year Jeff lost his health insurance, due to Judy’s past health issues, not having insurance was not a good idea. For more than a year the Parrishes have been paying for private insurance.
Until 3 months ago, this seemed manageable. Jeff had relocated to North Dakota to obtain employment. Although not the perfect solution, it worked. Then Judy was diagnosed with severe heart failure. Her initial testing showed her heart functioning at 40% level. Over the last 3 months her heart output has fallen to 10%. While she is in the process of completing the necessary arrangements to be placed on the heart transplant list, which include everything from moving closer to Ann Arbor to the gamet of tests, her heart is just working enough to get her through the day. She spends most of the day sleeping as her heart just cannot provide her with any excess energy.
So we ask for your help. If we can do anything, maybe it is to relieve some of the financial burdens that have been placed on this family. Jeff has had to quit his job to relocate to lower Michigan, while he looks for work the bills just continue to pile up inevitably causing more stress to Judy, which just hurts her heart even more. If we can collect $10,000 this will pay just the insurance premiums for one calendar year. That does not even begin to pay any of the expenses they are encountering with all the co-pays, deductibles, and travel expenses. Truly this family is in the struggle of their lives just to live, how many of us thank God every day for our health? Please take a moment, say a prayer, and make a donation. Any financial support you can give will truly make a difference.”
Since this posting Judy has received a pace maker and remains at the bottom of the heart transplant list until her heart goes below 10%. She is able to spend time at home in Marquette thanks to medical monitoring done over the phone. Judy continues to need support for medical bills and insurance as they continue to deal with this long term disability.
Judy is the first recipient chosen by Our Special Needs to receive our assistance.
